can cats get the hiccups
Why the Hiccup Cats? Why the Hiccup Cats? Have you ever caught your cat hanging? Probably not – it is not very common that the hypo cats, but it does happen. It's much more common in dogs, especially puppies. We ask around the office, and none of us here has seen a cat with hypo, however if it happens, this is what you should know. Hypo, or "singultus", is caused by the diaphragm that contracts involuntarily at the same time that the glottis is closed. This is caused by the irritation of the nerve that runs to the diaphragm. The hypo may occur by swallowing too much air while eating, as it occurs in small puppies or kittens, or may be caused by irritation of the gastrointestinal tract near the nerve. Possible causes of gastritis include eating or drinking too fast, parasites, hair balls, ingestion of the foreign body, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergy and many more. There have also been some cases of increased levels of calcium in the blood that cause hypo in dogs secondary to metabolic disease. How long should a hip cat last? Well, considering it's not so common in cats, and the fact that some serious medical conditions might be associated with hypo, anything that lasts more than a few hours should be evaluated by a veterinarian. What can you do to stop your cat from hiding? Contrary to the hypo is a common complaint in humans, which is usually easily solved with a variety of therapies in the home, hypo cats are less common and can be associated with serious illnesses. Therefore, it is not recommended that pet parents try any home therapy to resolve hypo in a cat. General tips include making sure the cat has plenty of food and water available, and give the cat a quiet time. Some cats prefer running water, so you should put a tap or circulating source. Don't try to force the cat to eat or drink! What else should you know about cat hypo? There are a number of things cats can do that might seem hypo, when in fact a different problem is occurring. This could include respiratory problems, foreign body (hylo, thread or tape ingestion), a foreign body in the airways, neurological conditions, or even a manifestation of puring – given that similar anatomical structures are involved in purification and colm. Hypocs themselves are unlikely to be dangerous, but in some cases they may be a sign of more serious illness. If your cat gets hypo often or if they last for long periods of time, then a veterinary consultation should be sought. Your veterinarian will probably recommend a physical exam, blood work and possibly X-rays to rule out serious illnesses.
